Squibs in Burnham Week 2022 9 Sep 2022
Burnham Week 2022 was enjoyed by all Burnham Squibs.
We were blessed with great Sailing conditions, warm weather and of course the best social calendar.
30 Squibs entered for Burnham week, which is an increase of 9 boats from last year. Talking to many competitors, there is certainly a buzz about the class and it looks like the Class is set to increase next year.
The Bank Holiday weekend racing was mainly contested between Jono Brown crewed by Chris Aggar and Micky Wright crewed by Alex Porteous. Jono and Chris won the weekend by the narrowest of margins, 1 Point. These two Boats dominated the fleet and were in a league of their own! But congratulations also go to Jack Grogan crewed by Alison Aspinall for an impressive third place.
Bank Holiday Monday evening, we were entertained by Emma and Richard Tucker House for Paella and Swimming. Thanks go to Richard, Emma, Imogen, Jason and Carl for the delicious food. Dan Mells and Tenneson on their Guitars sounded amazing in the open air they entertained us till late!
(1 more song) Many thanks to Richard and Emma for a Fab Night.
The next morning, we awoke with bleary eyes to compete for the Mid-Week Points.
Again, this was dominated by the same two boats, it was close, with Jono and Chris winning by a slender margin of 1 point.
We had a well needed rest day on Wednesday thanks to the wind which was great as after Malcy and Jaks chilly night a rest was very welcome. As always, the food was delicious and everyone partied on, into the night – I hear there was some dancing.
Thursday evening, we were entertained at another house party, Ray and Debbie’s Mexican Night. The Food as ever was delicious, and my daughter eyes (and many others) lit up when she went into the Dessert room. Music was performed by Ray and his friend, with Squib back up vocals, requesting for other songs to be played. Thanks to Ray and Debby another great evening!
Friday saw us having two races, to catch up for the missing Wednesday race. Race 1 was won by Malcy and Jaks. They were the only boat to have Podium over Jono and Micky. Well done Lady P.
Race 2 on Friday was won by Jono and Chris, making them winners of the Mid-Week points and leaving them with a 5-minute speech to give.
Friday evening was the Squib Dinner, everyone joined the Squib Class Captain for the Squib Cocktail on the sun blessed Balcony. The dinner was amazing as always and after dessert the Class Captain, stood up to address the fleet with a toast to the Squib Boat. Thank you’s were announced for all those concerned, assisting in making the Club tick.
A gift was given to Lucy Prior for her Seamanship, which she earned by getting her father (Adam) back on board safely after he fell out of the boat during the race.
I must mention another young Sailor, Hayden Gilmour, who helmed Heartbeat for his father. Well done, Hayden.
Well done also to the young Otter Sailor’s, who chartered the Club Squib Woody. The Sailed the Boat excellently and put in some good results. (Nathan Flynn, Harry Courts, Angus Beale and Ciara Murphy) aka the Orange Shorts Brigade, wearing full face Paint.
A new prize was given for biggest Faux Pa during Burnham Week – it was either going to be for someone losing their sails overboard or Man overboard. Gavin and his floating sails were the winner, we also know that whilst moored on the pontoon, the same boat let something else slip over the side that had to be retrieved by Dave the launchman – rumour has it the item was well on its way to the BSC! Well done Gavin for entering into the spirit and donning the ‘Mad Hatters’ costume entertaining for us!
The Dueer Trophy, was awarded to the winners Jono Brown and Chis Algar the Gap between first and second place was a massive 5 minutes, carefully arranged by Micky. The cup is silver, but silence is golden and that is what Jono and Chris decided to be for 5 whole minutes.! What a fun week!
