Squibs at Burnham Week

Squibs at Burnham Week 8 Sep 2023

What a week it was for the Burnham Squibs, not only socially, but also on the water.

(Despite the two non-sailing days)

With a total of 29 Squibs, including one visitor – (the Rusty boys), it was by far the biggest one design fleet on the river, with including sailors of all ages!

The Bank Holiday weekend was hotly contested and on Race 1 Dan and Charlie sailing 192 Firework for the first time, took line honours. Race 2,  Jack and Alison sailing 221 Budgies Tongue taking line honours. Race 3 was won by Malcy and Andy sailing 819 Lady Penelope. Micky and Alex sailing 811 Spoof put in another top 3 result and won race 4. Stuart Mears Sailing Dave Hydes 846 Sophie, put in a commanding lead to win the final race of the weekend. With one Discard of a 4th place, it was Micky and Alex  that won the weekend by 5 points to Malcy and Andy.

The first Squib Social was the Sunday Rum Punch Party at the rear of the Squash Courts. (Sounds like being back at School) With 70 Litres of Rum Punch, it had to be drunk. People turned up in loud shirts and the conversation got louder!  It was Nigel Grogan’s and Micky Wrights Birthday, so we sung in harmony, to wish them Happy Birthday. After that, everybody strolled to the RC, to dance the night away to FBI Band.

Tuesday morning, the mid-week Squib Fleet was diminished to 20 Boats, however we were still the biggest fleet on the river!

Tuesday Race 1, saw Micky and Alex taking line hours, closely followed by Robert and Tracy in 823 Humphrey.

Wednesday Race 2 got underway, it was Malcy and Jackie that took line honours with again Robert and Tracey taking second position. Robert and Micky were on level points, but it was Micky and Alex, that took the Mid-Week Trophy on countback.

Unfortunately, Thursday’s race 3 and Friday race 4 were abandoned, due to strong tides and lack of wind. Maybe this was a blessing in disguise, as we had kind invitations from Malcy and Jacks Tuesday evening of Chili and Paella and then Ray and Debbie Mexican night on Thursday evening. As aways both nights catered with fabulous food, washed down by copious amounts of alcohol.

Friday evening, we were joined by the Sand hoppers for our Class Dinner. Many thanks go to Simon and his team for a fabulous meal. During dinner, Gavin presented the Dick of the week award with a very funny performance. It was closely contested between Dan for his Granny Knots and karaoke efforts but, it was eventually awarded to Jonny Beale for tactics of going inside a parked Squib that he thought, was not aground.(see picture). Ps we look forward to Jonny presenting this most prestigious prize next year.

After Dinner, we all congregated downstairs in the bar to dance the night away DJ Wasto and Hall.

Saturday trophy day was also the Duerr Trophy, so coming second was not the place to be – as we all know a speech lasting the amount of time between first and second place must be written by the 2nd placed boat!

The race was won by Micky and Alex and in second position was Nic and Ross. Therefore look forward to hearing the speech from Nic at the end of year prizegiving.

Congratulations go to Micky and Alex for having a clean sweep.
