Team Athena Win National Marlos Ropes Match Racing 13 Sep 2019
Over the weekend of 8th & 9th September Team Athena travelled to Weymouth for the Marlow Ropes Women’s Match Racing National Championships the team consisted of Octavia Owen (Helm, WKSC), Scarlett Anderson (Main and spinnaker trim, RCYC), Hebe Hemming (Bow, WKSC) and Lucy Terkelsen (Jib Trim, SSC). The weekend started with the first round robin where they finished 2nd with just 1 loss. The 2nd round robin was completed on the Sunday finishing 2nd overall with only 3 losses over the 14 matches. This meant they qualified for semi finals where 2nd position races 3rd position and 1st position races 4th. Semi finals was best of 3 and after getting 2 straight wins we were through to the finals. After this the wind decided to disappear allowing a stop for lunch but luckily the sea breeze kicked in. The finals started with a slightly nervous team as Jemima was the only boat they hadn’t yet beaten. Finals was best of 5, the first race was taken by Jemima and her team, which made Team Athena even more determined to turn it around. Team Athena then controlled the next race pre start and managed to give them a penalty, allowing them to take the lead and maintain it throughout. Confident with 2 race wins they held the opposing team out at the pre start, kept their tacks neat and covering them all the way upwind. When they crossed the finish line the joy and euphoria and emotions got to them with tears and smiles and they all hugged and they took the win for the 2019 Marlos Ropes Women’s Match Racing National Champions.
