SQUIBS AND BLAZES HAVE AWAY MATCHES
It was a fantastic weekend of sailing for the Squibs who were racing as part of the Burnham Sailing Club’s Jimmy Starling Regatta. Racing windward leeward courses just off the Roach, 10 boats took part in some extremely close races over the two days in champagne sailing conditions and by the end of the weekend, there were just three points in it with Ian Gray and Ian Simons in Chequemate taking the win ahead of Spoof and Brutus. Notable mentions of the weekend should go to Simon and Charlie in Brutus for their two wins on day 1 and Ian Gray and Ian Simons for what was described by the race officer as “the best start of the weekend” in the first race of day 2. The full report can be found on Yachts & Yachting Online and many thanks must go to the team at BSC for running this event.
There were a few absences from the Squibs on Saturday as the Blaze fleet went to Draycote Water for the Blaze Midlands Championships. 12 Blazes made the journey to this inland water and actually made up half of the fleet competing! Racing was extremely close in what were some shifty conditions but Ben Harden (BSC) took the win for all 4 races whilst Malcolm Hutchings managed to hold his nerve in the last race to take 2nd place overall. Nic Tolhurst (5th), Paul Buckley (9th) and Ray Apthorp (10th) made up the top 10 whilst the rest were chasing on their heels. A fantastic day was had by all with talk already moving to the next event in a few weeks time!
