The Cheeseboard Trophy 26 Jul 2009
The Squib fleet once again had a massively enjoyable day competing for
the Rice & Cole’s Cheeseboard trophy in front of the club. Four short
races on a trapezoidal course really sharpened mark rounding skills of both helms and crews bringing large smiles to everyone’s faces.
This mid-week event invariably results in an eclectic mix of competitors and crew combinations. Dean Beckwith helmed a squib for the first time with Marion Aspinall crewing for the first time this year. It was a great pleasure to see Paul Tavinor back on the water at the event which named his Squib WHait A Minute last year. Third overall were Simon and Sarah Sanders in their first Cheeseboard, second was Phil Aspinall crewed by 12 year old daughter Alison and, once again, Ian Gray and Ian Simmons provided a master class in Chequemate with four straight wins and 1st off the line in every race.
The cheeseboard, thanks to our long time sponsors Rice & Cole, is a very social event with the fleet retiring to the club for a lengthy and enjoyable lunch where, as ever, the calls of “starboard” and “water” were replaced with ones for “port”.
