Squibs at RCYC Regatta Week 9 Sep 2020
Phil Aspinall reports that the Squibs had, as usual for late August, the biggest representation with several having their first outing of the year. The week was won by Micky Wright and Alex Porteous (Spoof) with near faultless results from arch-rivals Malcolm and Jackie Hutchings (Lady Penelope). The next 3 boats were all relative newcomers to the fleet, which bodes well for the rest of the season and the future. The main feature of the week was the regular search for mud. It started with Chris Agar and Lauren Bates (Cheap Thrill) who were so intent on rigging their rebuilt boat that they were dragged through the mud under the crane to the start of the first race. Monday saw 4 boats all take turns to plant themselves on the South Shore on the run home, the most significant being David Mellard and Phil Harbott (Electra) who lost places by parking 20 metres from the finish. The highlight of the week was the sight of 4 boats abreast on Branklet Spit after they had sequentially tried and failed to cut the corner. Also great that the Race Team added an extra race on Friday …club and river racing at its best.
