Squib Inland Championship 8 Oct 2012
41 boats from around the country entered the 2012 Squib Inland Championship at Rutland Water over the weekend of 6th & 7th October, seven from the Burnham fleet.
Very light shifty winds, as forecast, gave very tricky conditions for competitors and race management. The first big decision of weekend was not whether to have lager or spiced rum but who the Aspinalls would sail with! Phil and Micky had to decide between them whether to have rock star crew Howie Enkel or lightweight Marion, so Micky went for the light option and snapped up Marion.
Race 1 saw most of the RCYC boats start at the pin end and head left. Guy Fawkes (Phil/Howie) rounded first, Spoof 2nd (Micky/Marion), but only because, according to Micky, he didn’t know which course we were racing and waited for Phil to show him the way, and Lady Penelope 3rd (Malcolm/Andy). There were various place changes during triangle sausage course with big differences in pressure and angles over racecourse, Spoof managed to slip past Guy Fawkes too for the win with Lady Penelope hanging onto 3rd.
Race 2 ditto start procedure gave Lady Penelope an early lead from SCYC’s Dream On (Brian Holland) and Spoof. These places remained unchanged to the finish with Helmut Shöing (Nigel/Jack) pulling up fleet to 4th and Guy Fawkes 5th.
The large South Caernarvonshire fleet of 19 boats was left reeling in the wake of the RCYC’s fleet of seven boats as they are usually much more at home at the front of the fleet and desperately wanted “their” team trophy back from RCYC.
By Race 3 the wind had gone really light and Lady Penelope blew the start and never recovered. Spoof managed to hold onto 5th place while Helmut Shöing came 2nd in a close battle for a decisive win by Brimstone (the Rileys) with 3rd going to Alchemy (Gerard/Tony) which kept this trio very much in the hunt. The day’s racing ending with Spoof as overnight leader and Helmut Shöing 2nd and Lady Penelope 4th.
On Sunday the teams turned up to find no wind and mist over the reservoir, plus a few of the usual Burnham style hangovers, but the race officer was keen and sent everyone on to the water. Around 10:00 a very light breeze appeared, the mist lifted and the fleet was off for a very fluky race in brilliant sunshine.
Brimstone, Lady Penelope, Alchemy and Helmut started by the committee boat while Spoof went towards the pin. Brimstone, followed by Alchemy, tacked off right, which proved to be the way to go and hit the pressure on north shore of Rutland and led comfortably around the windward mark.
These positions remained unchanged and when the last scheduled race was abandoned with ten seconds to go this gave Brimstone (Bryan and Jenny Riley) the Championship by 1 point from Spoof (Micky Wright with Marion Aspinal) with 3rd place on the podium going to Helmut Shöing (Nigel and Jack Grogan).
Lady Penelope slipped to 5th overall but with three boats out of the top five and an excellent seventh from Guy Fawkes, RCYC retained the team trophy.
