Last weekend a crowded room from Otters to older sailors gathered for an engaging rules talk hosted in the sunny first-floor dining room—an ideal setting to kick off discussions around the latest updates to the Racing Rules of Sailing for the 2025–2028 Olympic cycle.

With 50 plus attendees, the session was certainly well-attended,(Graham Louth  the speaker mentioned afterwards it was the best attended talk he has hosted this year)  and full of lively discussion. While the new rulebook doesn’t introduce sweeping changes, it does offer clarifications to existing rules. Key topics included refinements around Proper Course, Avoiding Contact, Mark Room, and Giving Room at an Obstruction. These adjustments aim to reduce ambiguity and improve consistency on the water.

Graham Louth an RYA representative Graham Louth fielded a number of thoughtful questions from the audience. The most notably debated subjects mark room and avoiding contact, two areas where interpretation can vary widely.

Adding to the energy in the room was a blue and yellow card segment, where participants were put to the test on their rules knowledge. It sparked plenty of laughs and surprises—proving once again that while everyone thinks they know the rules, there’s always more to learn and ambiguity it seems!.
