Race Box Volunteers Required… 3 Feb 2014
…or Your Yacht Club Needs You!
Racing helms and crews are now much more appreciative of the efforts of the race teams than they used to be two or more decades ago. Some have actually had some exposure to the discipline of running a race and realise the teamwork involved.
A wave of acknowledgement from the boats at the end of a race or series of races is much appreciated by the team – one team member used to record DNW (did not wave) for boats that did not observe this courtesy!
We rely on volunteers to man the RCYC race box, often recruited from the Otters, sometimes from the local schools or by word of mouth. We now have Coral Tranter who, this coming season, will bring her computer skills to make sense of the computer recently installed in the race box.

We cover about 24 of a total of 32 weekends during the racing season and the workload on one race officer is quite onerous. A volunteer who would be a deputy race officer for some of these 24 weekends would be an enormous help.
Ideally we need someone with experience of racing but who no longer races.
Running a race box is easily learnt and we can organise a course to gain a Club Race Officer Certificate, if that is desired.
We also need some more youngsters to help and senior Otters are well qualified for this task, get the best ever weekend job, (banging guns) and are paid!
