Peter Lloyd – 1927-2017 23 Oct 2017
Peter Lloyd, who sadly died this week, was the only Cowes based Commodore of the Royal Corinthian Yacht Club and served from 1997 to 1999 during a distinguished sailing career.
Rob Campbell remembers that Peter followed him as Commodore. He lived in a house just behind the Cowes Clubhouse which he moved into from the North when he retired. He had raced from Abersoch before moving south as a successful Dragon helm. Barry Stanford, friend and fellow ‘Dragon’, adds he was a former Chair of the British Dragon Association, a Flag Officer of the Royal Thames as well as being a long standing member of the RYS. He won a number of International Regattas and, in more recent years, sailed a Petticrow Dragon called Virago with Peter Nicholson (Camper and Nicholson).
He also owned a Thames built motor yacht called Virgo which he used to bring to Burnham Week during his period as Commodore of RCYC. A fervent supporter of the RCYC he fought vigorously against the RORC takeover of the Cowes clubhouse and retained country membership of Burnham. At this time he contacted the Cruiser fleet in Burnham and still flew the RCYC ensign. He could still be found in the Cowes clubhouse bar every Saturday and Sunday which he preferred to the RYS.
Martin Makey sat with Peter and his family at the Dragon End of Regatta Ball in Cowes earlier this year, ‘Lovely man who clearly used to enjoy his sailing and very much a family man. An old school Corinthian who very much wished to retain our traditions and values.’
The RCYC send sympathy to his widow Carolyn (Cal) and his son, daughter, step son, two stepdaughters and numerous grandchildren.
