Peter Hughes 29.02.1944 – 08.04.2013
It is with great regret that RCYC announces the death of Peter Hughes, the launchman, on Monday 8th April. Although he had been unwell in the past few months, he seemed in better health for the start of the season so his sudden death has been a great shock to us all.
Peter will be difficult to replace. His knowledge of the river, skill in boat handling but above all, the way he watched over us, will be greatly missed. He noticed when one of his boats left the mooring and he did not go ashore at the end of the day until he was satisfied that every boat had returned or was accounted for.
His cheery grin was most welcome after an exhausting sail and if you were incapable of mooring up properly, he would help you do it. And it was all done with such good humour, even when sitting under his golf umbrella in his launch in the pouring rain…
Peter was a real stalwart of the club and gave us many years service. He will be missed by all our members and the sailing community of Burnham.
We offer our sincere condolences to his family.
