Olympians confirmed for Endeavour Trophy 30 Sep 2016
Two competitors from the Rio Olympic Games will be at the RCYC for the weekend 7-9 October racing for the Endeavour Trophy awarded to the Champion of Champions in the dinghy classes. It will take place in RS200s and this year a total of 27 invitations have been sent out.
Olympian Ben Saxton and Paralympian Niki Birrell will be competing as wild card entries. Ben Saxton took the Endeavour Trophy last year as Merlin Rocket champion and with Nicola Groves competed in the mixed multihull Nacra 17 class at Rio, making their Olympic debut. While Niki Birrell sailing the SKUD 18 with Alexandra Rickham matched their London 2012 result to achieve another bronze medal.
Sue Pelling reports: ‘Other competitors will include Nick Craig (D-One champion), Hannah and Nick Smith (Miracle champions), Archie and Freddie (Aero 5 champions) and Luke and Emma McEwen (RS800 champions).
Edwin Buckley, event organiser commented: “We are extremely pleased to be using the RS200 boats for this year’s regatta. As the racing proved last year, the pace will be fast and the competition will be fierce as the champions and Olympians fight it out for the ultimate trophy.” Nick Craig, six times winner of the Endeavour Trophy commenting on the inclusion of the wild card sailors said: ‘It is really exciting to know that we are not only racing against the best of the best in the UK but now also against the best the UK has to offer the world. The range of top quality sailors, tight racing and excellent race management make this one of my favourite events of the year. I’m hoping for 30+ knots so I get to stretch my legs in a RS200!”
RCYC members have an unrivalled, insiders’ view of the stars of dinghy sailing in a competition which, this year, promises to be particularly exciting. Members are, of course, welcome to book in for dinner on the Saturday night. Good weather would be a bonus.
