We met and gossiped over coffee then sat back to enjoy the demonstration of ‘How to arrange Spring Flowers’. Jane Cowell and Janet Thorogood of the Dengie Hundred Flower Arrangement Society opened their demonstration by confessing that they were only amateurs at this business…
Certainly, they arranged their stems of lilies, tulips and gerberas as well as more humble flowers into an array of greenery in a variety of containers as if they were professionals. They entertained us with their well-honed double act, amusing us with their anecdotes, and all the while their fingers coaxed the stems unerringly into stunning arrangements.

Then we enjoyed a delicious lunch and looked forward to the raffle; the greatest prizes were the flowers themselves and the lucky winners carried them away to decorate their homes for Easter.
The event was in aid of the Essex Air Ambulance whose charity funds were improved by £997. Ann Barker and Valerie Harrison, who dreamed up the demostration and organised everything, were delighted with the result.
They particularly praised the RCYC Staff, who made the visitors especially welcome.
Sadly, I was not a winner. But I came home and immediately disappeared onto the garden, secateurs in hand…
