Hang Out the Flags – Let’s Celebrate! 9 May 2015
Maybe VE Night was like this, with people still in uniform, at the beginning of the evening at least, and plenty of beer and wine. Landgirls in dungarees partied with GIs and Generals, naval officers with nurses, and ladies with seamed stockings were supplied by a very convincing spiv*. Hippo was the most convincing soldier in the army and he arrived, with his group, by jeep.
The party on RCYC Street was pulled together by Amanda Cole with her usual flair. Singer, Diane, created a great atmosphere wearing uniform for the first half of the show and changing into a gold evening gown for the cabaret numbers later on and even the grumpiest old members joined in 40s songs while Bill Jones, (what a star!) supplied the floor show. No, there was no spam or corned beef, we were at a Ritzy end of town and had excellent, traditional dishes that were much better than mother could have provided at the time.
