A most unusual addition to the Club’s artefacts has been donated by Tony Cash.

This weighty glass ball, with a silver tube inserted to hold matches, would have sat on the coffee table next to the silver cigarette box (and the silver ashtray, no doubt) and family and visitors would have helped themselves.

The raised concentric circles on the glass provided the rough surface needed to strike the matches, but sadly this can’t be demonstrated with today’s safety matches (for the benefit of realism in the picture above, we used Rock The Runway nail varnish!)

Hallmarks on the silver tube enable this interesting piece to be accurately dated to 1919.
