Caudle Cup 23 Sep 2024
This is the annual competition between the RCODs and RBODs.
Last year the RC lost the Caudle Cup by one point so this year there was great determination to win it back. The Caudle Cup has been raced since 1960 between the RCODs and RBODs. This year there were four boats from each class and two boats from each class were exchanged so that each team sailed two of each class. Due to a light easterly and a strong flooding tide a short but challenging windward leeward course between Fairway 5 and 7 was agreed, started by Race Officer Clive Page off the RC line. Full concentration was required by all teams to make way on the beats up the south shore and there were plenty of place changes ( as well as the odd grounding!). When the final results were totted up the Royal Corinthian won by one point with only a couple of seconds between 6th and 7th. A close run victory and a very enjoyable race. Prizegiving was hosted by the Royal Burnham including refreshments for all competitors – thank you!
The RCODs also had a good turnout for the Saturday points race in lovely warm sunshine. The short town course was chosen so the race could be shortened if the light and variable easterly failed on a day of equinox tides. Tide cheating was fun due to the height of the tide covering the saltings so we were sailing on parts of the river rarely navigable. Fortunately no one was stranded and racing was competitive. Corinna took line honours followed by Cormorant, Coryphee and Coralie.
