Burnham Squibs Cheeseboard and Mike Flint Trophy 2024

Micky Wright and Alex Porteous, sailing on Spoof 811, won the Mike Flint Trophy, hosted by Royal Corinthian Yacht Club over the Easter Weekend, 30 to 31st of March, with 2 wins and a 3rd, after the Cheeseboard race, scheduled on the Friday 29th of March, was canceled due to high winds.

As the Cheeseboard race, the start of the Squib season on the river Crouch, scheduled for 29th of March, was canceled due to high winds in excess of 30 knots, the fleet, 11 boats strong, made its way to the celebratory lunch, followed by the cheeseboard, sponsored by Ryce and Cole and a record breaking number of bottles of port.

A few dry land capsizes were reported.

The first day of the Mike Flint Trophy, scheduled for Saturday, 30th of March started with dead calm, yet, as the races were scheduled to only start after lunch, the fleet took advantage of the easterly afternoon wind and the glorious sunshine, to compete on a town course race.

Micky and Alex won the race, followed by Ray Apthorp and Hippo on Nemesis, 806 and Malcolm and Jackie Hutchings on Lady Penelope, 819.

After a relatively quiet evening, the second and final day of the Mike Flint Trophy saw 2 races scheduled for the morning and due to the easterly wind, another town course, XWK.

The first race was won by Malcolm and Jackie, followed by Robert Coyle and Marc Rawinsky, sailing on Humphrey 823 and Micky and Alex on Spoof, 811.

The last race, shortened to 1 lap due to the race box crew eagerness to “go to the bar”, was won by Micky and Alex, followed by Malcolm and Jackie and Robert and Marc.

The event marked the start of the sailing season for the Burnham Squib fleet and was celebrated in the most Squib-like manner.

The Burnham Squib Fleet is eager to host the Squib MAYhem, a two event combo over the month of May, the Squib Gold Cup and the East Coast Championship, with more details on the Royal Corinthian Yacht Club website.
