BOCCRC – St Mathew Cup 9 Sep 2026
On Sunday BOCCRC, along with BRATS and Victoria took part in the St Mathew’s Cup 85th Anniversary Race. During the Second World War Burnham and Creeksea were requisitioned by the Ministry of Defence and renamed HMS St Mathew. The area was considered a good spot to practise beach landings. In appreciation of the cooperation between the town, yacht clubs and the personnel of HMS St. Mathews, Naval Officers presented the Town Council with a trophy to be known as the HMS St.Mathew’s Cup for the purposes of a memorial race. Since then, this race has traditionally been a sailing race between the 4 local yacht clubs, however this year the rowers were invited to participate with a special race organised by BOCCRC before the sailing event, in recognition that rowing boats would have most certainly been involved in naval operations back in the day. The race consisted of 4 Harkers, each one representing one of the 4 local yacht clubs. Wren – RCYC, Willow – RBYC, Regardless – BSC and Matchless – CSC. Victory went to Wren coxed by RCYC member Harriet Norden making it a double win for the club!
Thankfully there were no beach landings on Sunday, the event went well and we hope to see it going forward with the rowers firmly onboard.
