Dragon End of Season Dinner 2 Dec 2009
The elements were battering the clubhouse as ninety Dragons sat down to their end of season dinner. Fortunately Woody had chosen a hearty menu with roast beef, beautifully cooked by Dean, to fortify us. End of season honours were shared this year between Quicksilver IV, Beauty & the Beast, Scorpio and Avalanche. There was consternation from the “Beast” (Rob Campbell) when the stats revealed his partner in the boat, “Beauty” (Katie Cole) had won more races than him in the season!
This rivalry has not been the only one to entertain the fleet this year with teenager Matthew Young and dad Lloyd joining the fleet in different boats, Hand of Fortune and Valanga respectively. Son is ahead of Dad in this fierce rivalry and Dad regularly gets a hard time for it, and with Matthew picking up Rene’s crew prize, it looks like a bleak winter for Lloyd… Martyn Fogg was awarded the Motty Rankin trophy for the most consistent senior helm in river racing through the season. Yvonne Hall did well, winning a brand new spinnaker in the raffle, David will have to be on best behaviour in the run up to Christmas.
Finally, the most important trophy of the evening, the Clanger Bell, was entertainingly awarded by the Biff team (Tim Tavinor, Nicky & Thomas Wilton) to Mike Holmes for a season of missed marks, groundings and consistent misdemeanours, all denied by Mike in typically defiant manner! Thanks to Woody and all his helpers for a splendid evening, thoroughly enjoyed by all.
