Easter Regatta 2013 at RCYC 2 Apr 2013
What a surprise! The bitterly cold weather prior to Easter deterred many potential competitors, leaving just seven hardy entrants, the smallest entry on record. And the surprise was that over the four days we enjoyed some fantastic racing in beautiful conditions.
We had Club line starts on the Friday and Monday and sandwiched in between we had windward/leewards from a committee boat, three races each on Saturday and Sunday. Eight races had been planned for the weekend and all eight were completed on schedule.
The sailors were all well dressed and, although people on shore queried the intense cold, the sailors all proclaimed plenty of warmth and plenty of sunshine.
The winner overall was Beauty and the Beast with Rob Campbell, Matt Walker and Leigh Behrens. Leigh had come all the way from Hobart, Tasmania and says that he finds our water and our tides very interesting!
Runner up was the Wade family, with James sailing with Mark and Mandy in Avalanche and third was Ecstatic sailed by Peter Marchant with Katie Cole and Jonathan Hill.
The Dragons thank all the people who worked to make the weekend so enjoyable, the Wades (our class captains), the Race Officers, the mark layers (a really tough job in these cool conditions) and all the other wonderful helpers.
On shore, we all enjoyed the Royal Corinthian Fitting Out Dinner and live band on Saturday and the Dragon Supper on Sunday. The 2013 season has started in style and those of you who decided against joining us have missed a wonderful weekend.
Make sure you are ready to race next weekend – that is an order!
