Dragon Burnham Week Report 6 Sep 2015
The Dragon fleet had a competitive week with Robert Campbell, the Wades and Mike Holmes taking prizes – but our report is from a newcomer, Leigh Turvey, sailing with her partner Andy Moss on Humoresque.
After a few months of sailing instruction under Andy's tuition and getting to grips with the numerous ropes to pull, I have just completed my first full Burnham Week. Eight days of racing can be summed up in three words: energetic, exhausting and exhilarating. The sailing has been physically demanding, mentally challenging and very gritty at times. It has been a "full on" experience of enjoyment with frustration, coupled with a sense that I finally know what I am doing or at least what is expected of me in the boat. Socialising on the Corinthian balcony after each race with a glass of vino or two, swapping racing stories and lively moments on the water, finished off each day nicely. There was also a host of evening events during the week which were great fun and well attended.
My experience during Burnham Week was only of the Dragon fleet, but I am sure other fleets are as welcoming and as much fun to sail and socialise with. Burnham Week plus one day and I am sitting at home hardly daring to contemplate the start of the working week, my thoughts jumping between so many varied experiences enjoyed during the last few days. Burnham Week 2016 is already in the diary.
