Amok Sinks 29 May 2006
It was during the second race on the Monday when the real nasty squall hit the fleet, accompanied by hailstones. Most competitors had completed the run and were making their way up the final beat, but some, like Amok, with spinnakers still set, were in real trouble.
According to Simon Cash, who was crewing for Clive Morgan, together with Kate Sanderson, they broached one way then the other, before gybing and being pinned down by the spinnaker. There was nothing they could do in these conditions and Amok sank immediately.
Mike Hayles and Patrick Gifford’s Kraken also sank but in much deeper water and, so far, all efforts to find her have failed. Amok was refloated and is now back in Burnham for a check-up.
The irony is that Simon Cash, experiencing his third sinking, was due to go wreck diving the weekend following the Edinburgh Cup!
