2014 Dragon Edinburgh Cup 15 Jul 2014
During the second week of July six Burnham teams, Avalanche, Ganador, Hands Off, Page Boy, Quicksilver, Storm and 1/3 of team Tigger headed to Lymington for the 2014 Edinburgh Cup hosted by the Royal Lymington Yacht Club. As the East Coast experienced cloudy, cold, wet and windy weather, some of our Dragon sailors were racing in the idyllic location of Christchurch Bay in near perfect sailing conditions!
The move to holding the event at a new South Coast venue proved to be a popular choice, the club could not have been more hospitable and the race team on the water was extremely organised and efficient.
Initially the sailors were concerned about the long sail out to the race area but it turned out to be a very pleasant sail of just over an hour with a stunning view of The Needles. So after a glorious week of racing a series of six races for the Edinburgh Cup, two races for the Chairman’s Decanter and a Crew’s Race on courses of three beats of up to 1.
9 miles long, the clear winner of the Edinburgh Cup and the 1st Corinthian was Aimee from RCYC Cowes.
All of the Burnham Dragons featured in the top ten in one race or another but the prize winners were Tigger with Tim Tavinor as crew 2nd overall, Avalanche Mark and Mandy Wade, Duncan Grindley 7th overall and 2nd Corinthian and Storm Jono, David and Lyn Brown 11th overall and winners of the Jordan Bell for the highest placed boat without a top five result.
Next year the Edinburgh Cup will return to Scotland to another new venue for the Dragon sailors in Largs, so fingers crossed that the weather is just as kind!
