Snow Globe Races 1 & 2 11 Nov 2017
9.00 a.m. Seventeen boats were rigged and ready for the start of the dinghy Snow Globe series and, for the first time in an RS 200, we were honoured to have Rear Commodore of sailing Phil Aspinall along with rock star crew Andy Ramsey from Yachting Solutions.
But alas we were greeted with a mill pond.
The wind, forecast to build, was nowhere to be seen and the race was postponed for an hour. Several of the boats decided to call it a day while members at breakfast in the RCYC were treated to the annual winter fashion show performed by fine figured athletic types parading around the bar showing off their new Zhik (series sponsor) wetsuits.
Patience was rewarded for those keen enough to wait and just before 12 midday the wind finally arrived and racing got under way.
In Race 1 the RS 200s took all three podium places, Jo Tribe and Marcus Collingbourne of the BSC took the top spot followed by Charlie Pitcher/Sophie Dawson and Kathryn Hutton Penman/Matt Pike.
In Race 2 Aspinall and Ramsey nailed the start and led the fleet to the first mark, only to perform an interesting pirouette manoeuvre allowing most of the fleet to overtake (Phil, please talk us through this at the next coaching session!) The second race was again won by Jo Tribe and Marcus Collingbourne in a 200 followed by Ant Law leading home a very competitive laser radial fleet.
Be sure to turn up on time, 9.30 sharp, for the briefing in the RCYC bar next week where Zhik prizes for the previous week will be awarded.
