First Cruiser Event of 2021 4 May 2021
‘Voyager’ leads in David Eagling Memorial Trophy Race 1st May 2021
Mark Eagling started the race from the Committee Boat for the event which, being scheduled much earlier in the calendar than usual, was very close to his father’s anniversary. The four participants established an order early on. And as Race Officer Mark says, in his photo the sky looks more dramatic than the action!

However, later in the race there was some very close tussles between Voyager and the 707 as well as between Pingu and Trinco.
Simon and Sarah Sanders, sailing in their Dufour 32 Classic ‘Voyager’, are consistently competitive in all of our races. Tom Keeper and his daughter Amy decided to forgo the admiring looks they get in their classic Drascombe Lugger complete with romantic tan sails and followed Tom’s hunch that a club 707 just might be more efficient climbing to windward. On board Peter and Caroline Hooper’s classic Contessa 26 ‘Trinco’ were additional crew, Leslie and Harry Bird with a four legged friend to do some nifty work on the foredeck. A big welcome to new members David and Jack Page who sailed in their Hunter Horizon 30 ‘Pingu’ with Paul Van Damme. The easily driven David Thomas designed hull evolved from the Hunter Impala but with the misfortune of some lulls in the wind whilst tacking out of the Roach in the first of a strong flood they lost out to ‘Trinco’.
Despite a chill in the Northerly wind a good sail was enjoyed by all followed by lunch and some drinks on the balcony afterwards.
Listed below are the participating boats showing their position on corrected time with the Handicap for this race and the Handicap to be applied in the next race after applying the ‘Time Correction Factor’ in accordance with the RYA National Handicap for Cruisers (NHC) formula.
