Visit to South Woodham Ferrers Yacht Club
30th July 2022
Our visit upriver to SWFYC took place in warm, mostly sunny weather. HW Burnham at 14:35 was just about perfect for the trip, helping our five boats (mostly under power) up to South Woodham on a rising tide. We had good time to moor up, get ashore, enjoy a very good BBQ lunch and socialise with our hosts before an easy cruise back to Burnham on the ebb. South Woodham’s plans to provide club moorings for our use were somewhat compromised by the Harbour Master’s surprise occupation of one of those buoys for the whole tide, in order to be able to challenge passing small boats and paddle boarders about payment of harbour dues. The Harbourmaster did however direct us to other vacant buoys, and we took his word as authority to use them. For some of our boats it was their first visit this far up the river and surprise was expressed about how pretty and interesting the riverside is up there.
Our hosts were extremely generous in their provision of barbecued food and many side dishes, all prepared by their members. The Club doesn’t have a bar, so we all brought our own drink and no-one went thirsty. The sun shone on us all over lunch on the Club balcony and we had a very pleasant afternoon socialising with our hosts. We thanked our hosts for a very enjoyable day, and they thanked us for coming. We all looked forward to their upcoming visit to us at RCYC on 20th August for lunch and maybe stay for our Pontoon Party so that we can play host to them as generously as they did to us.
