2014 Brightlingsea Race for RCYC Cruisers 5 May 2014

Thanks to George Winder in Sprite, the Committee boat start was on time on Saturday 3rd May but Star Swan was a bit early and allowed Sherpa to gain the lead, briefly.

Postions changed several times in the light beat against the flood on the way down river and Bob Kirkby ordered his crew Johnny to find the Kedge in the recently launched Sherpa. This tactic, together with their better sail trim and cunning, resulted in them beating the less experienced Anne and Arthur Heasley, crewed by Patrick and Gillian Rogers, when the course was shortened.

That left enough time for the boats to arrive in Brightlingsea in time for cocktails on Sherpa and a great evening and dinner at the hospitable Colne Yacht Club. This was followed by drinks on Star Swan where Bob Kirby was awarded the customary winner’s glass. This was another great sunny weekend for those in the fleet that got there.

The Harbour and the Colne Yacht Club staff had made us feel very welcome.
